My week staying with a friendly and welcoming Chilean family!

Sat 24th Jan - Tomé

I am up, showered, grab some bread and fruit from the kitchen (set up for breakfast), check out, say my goodbyes to the staff and then head to metro station where I take the train to the bus terminal.. leaving behind my home for the past two weeks!

I board my bus to Tomé, which is comfy and has TV screens showing in total 3 movies during the 7 hour bus journey. My lunch is a tasty pack of chocolate biscuits!

On arrival to Tomé, Carlos meets me and drives me back to his home where on arrival I meet his parents Anna Marie and Roberto. Lunch is all ready and I eat with Carlos! Anna Marie has cooked Arrejado, a chicken dish with rice and peas along with a cake!

Soon after lunch we are heading to Dichato, a beachside town around half an hour away. Carlos Aunt, who is also currently staying at their house, also comes along. The beach is busy , and we spend a few hours strolling down the beach side path.. it is a hot hot day. This area was devastated after the 2010 earthquake, which caused a tsunami to wipe out the area.

On our return to La Casa, we have tea.. English Earl Grey, bread with ham and cheese.. plus cake!

Me acuesto mas temprano!

Lunes 26 de enero - Tomé/Concepción

In the morning me and Carlos go into town to have our haircut. It is very busy, with only one barber.. cutting both male and styling female.. We have to wait a long time before it's our turn, so I have the chance to attempt to read some Chilean magazine articles. The hair cut is nice and cheap.. £4.

Back at Carlos' house we have Lentija con chorillo for lunch. Later in the afternoon we drive to Concepción where Carlos shows me around his University (where he studied and now works) and then the city. Before heading back to Tomé we pick up Carlos' parents, who also came to Concepción to go shopping. Back in Tomé we have completos for dinner.

Martes 27 de enero

Carlos goes to work in the morning, I spend the time doing some spanish but mainly planning my travels in the south of Chile. After a lunch of Budin de Zapallo Italiano con arroz.. tasty.. Carlos drives me, his mum and aunt to a few sites around Tomé.

First we stop to see the view from Lirquen then we continue to Penco but it is very windy so we instead go to Cocholgue Beach.

In the evening me, Carlos and Roberto (Carlos' dad) walk to the beachside bar 'Kangura' for a few beers. An enjoyable time spent sharing similarities and differences between life in Chile and England. The night is made more interesting when Carlos' cousin turns up.. a 45 year old acting like he is still in his 20's!

Miercoles 28 de Enero

Today Carlos' young cousins Juliette and Alonso arrive, they are shy at first but soon Juliette is helping me with my Spanish. . . She laughs when I show her that I can't currently roll my r's.

For lunch we have pork with mashed potatoes. Afterwards me and Carlos skype back home to England and catch up with mum and say hi to nan. Juliette joins us and Alonso (only very briefly) says hi!

Me and Carlos then pick up Valentina and we drive to Concepción where we will be having sushi for dinner. On route we stop at the bus terminal where I buy my tickets for my next journey to Pucon via Temuco, along with my return ticket to Concepción from Puerto Montt in a couple of weeks time. I have booked up a return flight from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas so that I can go and trek Torres del Paine!

The sushi is very tasty.. we buy a lot and I am very full after! Back in Tomé we again head to Kangura where I try a Michelada.. a drink involving a glass with a lemon juice in the bottom quarter.. you then add a beer of your choice.. the whole rim is covered in a salty/peppery/horrid substance that you have to taste in order to drink. . My first and last!!

Jueves 29 de enero

A lazy morning for me, Carlos heads to Uni for his final morning of work.. he will be flying to Melbourne at the end of February where he will be studying for his Masters.

For lunch we have chicken with ensalada rusa. In the afternoon me, Carlos and Roberto go for a walk to the hills/river behind the houses.. or as Roberto likes to call it.. his backyard!

In the evening me and Carlos take a taxi into town where we meet Valentina at a local summer evening fete style pop up food/drinks stalls.. at one point entertainment from a singer. We have a couple of Terremotos (so good.. ) and try some tasty enpanadas. Here we meet Tia and her parents Elizabeth and Samuel. We spend the evening chatting with them, sharing travel stories.

Afterwards we head again to El Cuerto where we have a beer before taking a taxi back. A great night and a great end to my week staying with Carlos and his family. Tomorrow I will be taking the bus from Concepción to Pucon and continuing my travels in the South of Chile.
